Service Desk & Technical Support Jobs in the IT Industry

Find your next role in Service Desk or Technical Support in New Zealand

Service Desk Analysts provide first-line support, resolving Level 1 and 2 issues with systems, networks, and applications, and coordinating with other engineers on anything beyond their scope. The role blends technical problem-solving with strong customer service skills. At Younity, we specialise in connecting Service Desk and Technical Support professionals with New Zealand’s leading tech companies.

Why choose Younity as your recruitment partner for Service Desk Analyst roles

At Younity, we work alongside Service Desk Analysts across New Zealand, from those just starting out in IT, to experienced analysts confident across Level 1 and Level 2 support. We understand the technical detail that sits behind a job title, from Office 365 and identity support to device management, desktop troubleshooting, and high-volume contact-centre style service desks, and we take the time to learn what “a great fit” means for you.

We partner with employers across a range of industries, including organisations running large-scale, high-ticket-volume service desks as well as smaller environments where you’ll get broader exposure. Because we’re close to the market, we can give you practical guidance on what hiring managers are prioritising right now, and how to position your experience in a way that resonates.

Just as importantly, our approach is human-centric. We’ll keep communication clear and timely, advocate for you through the process, and support you to make a decision you feel confident about, not just for your next role, but for your longer-term career direction.

What does a Service Desk Analyst do in IT?

A Service Desk Analyst is typically the first point of contact for users who need help with IT systems, networks, hardware, or applications. Most work is managed through a ticketing system, where you log issues, ask the right questions, and prioritise requests based on impact and urgency.

You’ll triage problems and resolve Level 1 and Level 2 issues where possible, for example Microsoft Windows and Microsoft 365 queries, password resets and account access via Microsoft Active Directory, device setup and policies through Microsoft Intune, printer issues, Citrix access, and day-to-day troubleshooting.

When an issue is outside your scope, you’ll escalate it to the right internal team or vendor, but you’ll still own the customer experience by tracking progress, communicating clearly, and ensuring the issue is resolved within expected timeframes.

What’s it like to work in this discipline?

Service desk work is fast-paced and varied, no two days are exactly the same. You might start the morning helping a new starter get set up, then move into troubleshooting a network connectivity issue, and finish by supporting a business-critical application outage with your wider IT team.

It’s also one of the best entry points into the IT industry in New Zealand. You build strong foundations in troubleshooting, communication, and IT service management, while getting exposure to real-world tools, environments, and processes.

You’ll usually work closely with other analysts, engineers, and technicians, which makes it a highly team-oriented discipline. Over time, many Service Desk Analysts specialise into areas like desktop engineering, systems administration, cloud support, networking, or cybersecurity.

What qualifications or experience does this role benefit from?

There’s no single path into a Service Desk Analyst role, but recognised qualifications and certifications can help demonstrate capability, particularly if you’re early in your career.

  • New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology Technical Support (Level 5) or New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5), both building broad IT concepts and hands-on support skills that can support entry-level employment or further study
  • CompTIA A+ Certification, a widely recognised entry-level certification covering hardware, networking, operating systems, security, and troubleshooting
  • ITIL 4 Foundation Certification, covering the fundamentals of IT service management and how to deliver services in a structured, customer-focused way
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Fundamentals (MS-900), validating foundational knowledge of Microsoft 365 services, licensing, and common productivity, security, and device-management concepts
  • Google IT Support Professional Certificate, an online entry-level programme covering troubleshooting, customer care, networking, operating systems, and system administration

Preparing a CV or cover letter for a Service Desk Analyst role

Lead with service desk outcomes rather than responsibilities, for example “resolved 25 to 35 tickets per day while meeting SLAs” or “improved first-call resolution by documenting repeat fixes.” Name the tools you’ve used and how, including ticketing systems, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Active Directory, Citrix, Microsoft Intune, and any remote support tooling.

It’s also worth showing your troubleshooting approach, briefly describing how you triage, ask clarifying questions, isolate the cause, test fixes, and communicate next steps, and proving your customer service skills with specifics such as first point of contact experience, contact centre exposure, or supporting non-technical users under pressure. Highlight ITIL-aligned habits like incident management, prioritisation, escalation, and working to SLAs, even if you haven’t held an ITIL certification yet, and include hands-on support examples such as hardware swaps, device builds, or workstation setup.

Finally, tailor your cover letter to the environment, making it clear whether you thrive in high-volume service desks, corporate internal support, managed service providers, or hybrid/remote support models.

A career as a Service Desk Analyst offers the opportunity to build a strong foundation in IT, develop valuable troubleshooting and customer service skills, and open the door to a wide range of technology career paths.
