What does a Test Analyst do in IT?
A Test Analyst designs and executes manual test processes for software products, applications, and systems, usually as part of a wider delivery team that includes developers, business analysts, and project managers.
While every organisation is different, Test Analysts commonly:
- Design, develop, and document testing plans, including scope, approach, schedules, and environments, and create and maintain test cases aligned to requirements and user journeys
- Perform test execution across a range of testing types, such as system, integration, user acceptance testing (UAT), performance checks, and sometimes unit-level support
- Identify, record, prioritise, and track issues using structured defect management practices, and diagnose and troubleshoot faults by reproducing issues and capturing evidence
- Participate in the software development lifecycle, especially in Lean and Agile environments, and support documentation such as user guidance and operational procedures
In many NZ environments, you’ll also see Test Analysts working with tools like SQL, Postman API Platform, Microsoft Azure DevOps, and Atlassian Jira to validate data, test APIs, manage test activity, and report defects.

What qualifications or experience does this role benefit from?
Many IT employers prefer candidates with a relevant degree, such as Computer Science or Information Technology, but there are multiple pathways into testing, especially if you have strong analytical skills and experience working with systems and end users.
Qualifications and learning that commonly support a Test Analyst career include the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL), a globally recognised entry-level certification administered in NZ by ANZTB, and a strong baseline for testing terminology and technique. For experienced Test Analysts wanting deeper specialisation, the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level – Test Analyst (CTAL-TA) is a relevant next step, while the Test Management (CTAL-TM) equivalent aligns well with Test Lead or Test Manager responsibilities. For formal postgraduate study in NZ, options include the Postgraduate Diploma in Software Testing (Level 8) from AGI Education, or Massey University’s Graduate Diploma in Information Sciences, which includes a course designed to assist students preparing for ISTQB Foundation Level.
Experience-wise, employers often look for writing clear test cases and maintaining practical test plans, strong manual testing capability and end-to-end thinking, confident defect reporting, and familiarity with Agile delivery and common tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Postman, or SQL.
Career progression is also well established. People often start in entry-level roles such as Service Desk Analyst or IT support, move into a Test Analyst role (sometimes specialising in system, integration, UAT, performance or unit testing), and then progress to Senior Test Analyst, Test Lead, QA Engineer, or Test Manager.
Preparing a CV or cover letter for a Test Analyst role
A strong Test Analyst application makes it easy for an IT employer to see what you tested, how you tested it, and the impact you had on delivery quality.
Lead with your testing strengths, calling out manual testing, test execution, test planning, and defect management up front, then back it up with examples. Show your testing scope by mentioning the types of testing you’ve done (system, integration, UAT, end-to-end) and the kinds of applications, such as web, mobile, data, APIs, or enterprise platforms, and quantify where it helps, for example the number of test cases created, releases supported, or defects found early that reduced rework.
Include the tools and ways of working you’ve used, such as Jira, Azure DevOps, Postman, or SQL, and mention your Agile/Lean experience and how you collaborated with developers and BAs. Demonstrate communication too, highlighting how you wrote clear defect reports, contributed to stand-ups, and supported stakeholders during UAT.
