We at Younity are proud to announce that we have offered our support to the Duffy Books in Homes literacy programme, playing our part in helping to break the cycle of ‘booklessness’ amongst children in schools throughout New Zealand.
Duffy Books in Homes have, for the last 25 years, made it their mission to encourage children to love books and love reading. Their key message is “It’s Cool to Read and Cool to Achieve!”.
Children across New Zealand have differing access to books at home, the people at Duffy are doing their bit to bridge that gap and make books available to as many children as they can. They aim to kindle a thirst for knowledge, allowing kids to discover their own reading tastes, and the enjoyment and advantages that reading can bring.
Duffy partner with our government, individual schools and NZ businesses and fund the cost of 5 books per child, per year in each school. These are usually low decile schools between decile 1-4. The reason is that children at these schools are more likely to come from homes that have limited, or no access to books.
Duffy Books in Homes firmly believe, as do we at Younity, that all New Zealand children deserve the chance to enjoy reading and the chance to achieve.
As such, we have chosen to place our support behind two schools in our local communities. These are Owairaka District School in Auckland and St Bernadette’s School in Wellington. We are excited and keen to get involved with both schools and help out more where we can. More to come on that throughout the year.
